This week's hike was on the Appalachian Trail near Franklin, NC from Wayah Crest Picnic Area to 5,216 ft. Siler Bald and the Siler Bald Shelter loop.
HIKERS: John Anderson, Mike Bell, Jenny Bell, Phil Brownrigg, Joe Collins, Pam Euliss, Stephen Gales, Tim Hale, Bob Magee, Dick Metzgar, Terre Pratt, Vic Robson, Carole Wintle and Jack Wintle.
TRAIL INFO. - This portion of the Appalachian Trail offers fabulous mountain views especially from the summit of Siler Bald. We also hiked to the Siler Bald Shelter for a total of 5.5 miles.
Directions: From Franklin, travel west on US 64 for 3 miles to Old Murphy Road where there is a Wayah Bald sign. Turn right and drive .2 mile to Wayah Road (SR 1310). Turn left and continue for 9 miles to Wayah Gap and FR 69. There is an Appalachian Trail crossing sign. (Wayah Crest Picnic Area is on the left.)
Another great day for a hike! Mostly cloudy and occasional light sprinkle. Temperatures between 69-72 degrees
FLOWERS IN BLOOM: Heal-all, White Clover, Red Clover, Pale Jewelweed, Rattlesnake Plantain, Woodland Sunflower, Carolina Lily, Milkweed, Fire Pink, Red Bee Balm, White Bee Balm, Starry Campion, Oxeye Daisy, Phlox, Gerardia, Wild Hydrangea, Wood Aster, Joe Pye Weed, Coreopsis, Dodder.
Birds Identified: Raven, Blue Jay, Towhee, Junco, Nuthatch.
